For years, MARZI has operated in the music industry’s shadows, shaping hits behind the scenes alongside artists like Travis Scott, NAV, and Swae Lee. With “Dancing & Crying,” he steps into the spotlight — and out of his hip-hop wheelhouse.
The irrefutable earworm — which rests firmly in the dance/electronic lane and fittingly finds a home via new label in the space, Modern Delivery — nevertheless bears the influence of MARZI’s hip-hop roots. The song’s can’t-get-this-out-of-your-head-caliber melody stems from one stuck in MARZI’s head for years, initially conceived for a hip-hop project. On “Dancing & Crying,” MARZI re-imagines it within a house context, bringing what was once a nascent idea to catchy completion.
“This song has been stuck in the back of my head for years, so to finally be able to finalize it and release it to the world is very satisfying,” the Los Angeles-based DJ/producer said.
With “Dancing & Crying” serving as a compelling signal of what is still to come from MARZI, who adds that he “started this project because I was fed up with working with artists strictly for their projects…putting my future in other peoples’ hands and putting my dreams on hold,” it’s clear that there’ll certainly be more dancing than there is crying as MARZI’s solo project matures.
