#HFF26: Nilbog! The Troll 2 Musical, reviewed

Nilbog! The Troll 2 Musical is presented by 2Cents Theatre ten years after its first Hollywood Fringe outing in 2016.  The show starts with a sung prologue telling us that Troll 2 is regarded as a great bad movie. This serves as an explanation/apology for what follows.

A family go on a road trip…

…to a village (Nilbog) where there be flesh-hungry goblins, songs ensue (Music by Juan Lozano). Like most people, I was unfamiliar with the source work. So, it’s difficult to say how accurate a parody the show is. But I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Performances are uniformly good with stand-out work from Tiffany Asta as the young boy Joshua. Also, Sarah Schulte as big sister Holly. And, Joe Hernandez-Kolski and Rebecca Larsen as Mom and Dad. Eric Geller as the ghost of Grandpa Seth seemed to be in his own, equally good, show.

The large cast (I counted 16) are clearly enjoying it and that becomes infectious despite, or maybe because of, the silliness of the plot. Crisp and witty direction is by Kristen Boulé, who co-created the piece with Asta and Lozano. Six producers are credited, which must be a Fringe record. Production values are good and excellent use is made of the Cat’s Crawl space.

Nilbog! The Troll 2 Musical won’t be to everyone’s taste. But it will be some people’s favourite show.
