Leap Day 2024 is today, February 29th, and many restaurants and retailers plan to celebrate this extra day by offering freebies, contests, and other fun offers.

What is a Leap Year and when is Leap Day?
As a child, you probably learned that a year is 365 days, but the Earth takes closer to 365.25 days to make a full trip around the sun. So after four years, those extra quarter-days add up to one whole extra day. This day is added to the end of February to help keep Earth’s dates synchronized with the planet’s movements around the Sun.
Since the Earth’s journey is precisely 365.24219 days, one year is about 11 minutes less than 365.25 days. To make up that difference, we skip Leap Day during “century” years (ending in -00) unless they are also divisible by 400. We skipped Leap Day in 1700, 1800, and 1900, but we did observe it in 2000. The next skipped leap year will occur in 2100, so be sure to take advantage of these deals while you can! 😉
