With a firm belief that there is no valid reason for male artists to dominate professional stages both on Broadway and around the country, SheNYC Arts is challenging the status quo by offering a new way for theaters to support gender-marginalized writers, composers, producers, directors, and other theater artists.
With the new licensing wing, SheNYC will make their previous SheNYC, SheLA, and SheATL Summer Theater Festival shows available for licensing for productions nationwide. All proceeds from licensing fees will be split between SheNYC Arts and the writers of the shows, bolstering SheNYC’s fight for gender equity while putting money directly in the pockets of marginalized artists.
“Thanks to exceedingly popular playwrights like Lauren Gunderson, Lynne Nottage, and Paula Vogel, the evidence shows us that regional, community, and educational theaters have a desire to produce plays by women and that show diverse points of view,” SheNYC Artistic Director Danielle DeMatteo says of the new wing. “Unfortunately, looking at the pool of shows that make it to Broadway, those theaters aren’t getting a lot of options to choose from that fulfill their missions while living up to their promises of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We’re going to fill that need by providing them with incredible, educational, fun, heartbreaking, high-quality shows to fill their seasons and give their audiences what they want.”
Additionally, any new shows that participate in the upcoming Summer Theater Festivals, including their newly announced Dallas-Fort Worth Branch, SheDFW, will be eligible to join the library of licensed scripts.
The initial launch includes the following scripts, which are immediately available for licensing: a kid by Erika Hakmiller, arabesque no 1 by Cambria Denim, Beautiful Pasadena by Jen Rudin, Children of Camelot and To Each His Own by Nakisa Aschtiani, Dream a Little Dream of Me by Kay Kemp, Dancing Girl by Elinor T (playwright of SheNYC’s recent critically-acclaimed off-Broadway run of BLOODSHOT) and Drew Vanderburg, over easy by Abaigeal O’Donnell, Pot Odds by Gabrielle Wagner Mann, Sheepwell by Margaret Rose Caterisano, The Firefly Web by Erika Jenko, To Serve the Hive by Julia Byrne, too much skin by Carolene Joy Cabrera King, and We’re Not Friends by Caroline Ullman.
