Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. will begin closing down and liquidating about a third of the approximately 150 stores it plans to shutter in a round of cost cuts, with the first round focused on the upper Midwest, New York and New Jersey.

The store closings come amid the retailer’s plan to let go about 20% of its workforce as it works to stay afloat. Those reductions were first announced just days before the suicide of the company’s chief financial officer, Gustavo Arnal, Sept. 2.

Bed Bath & Beyond has been grappling with a liquidity crisis amid a prolonged sales slump, and burned half a billion dollars in a single quarter this year. As its cash reserves have dwindled, the retailer has struggled to maintain good relationships with its suppliers and keep its stores stocked with national brands. A loan secured in August will provide about $500 million in new liquidity for the Union, New Jersey-based company.
