Sarah J. Maas is taking notes from Taylor Swift. She owns her masters. Which means she can still adapt A Court of Thorns and Roses, despite whatever Hulu says. “I have the rights back to everything now. And getting the rights back to all my things has been a big part of my journey in recent years,” Maas told Alex Cooper on Call Her Daddy. “I look at any TV or movie adaptation as another facet of the worlds I’ve created, and it’s something I want to be in charge of.”

This is also the route BookTok’s other favorite daughter, Colleen Hoover, has taken. Hoover had said the experience of making It Ends With Us, and having her vision altered by outside parties, gave her PTSD. She has been much more involved with every subsequent adaptation, up to and including starting her own production company.

Right now Maas is focused on finishing four overlapping arcs of ACOTAR. The sixth book in the series comes out this October, with the seventh following close in January 2027. But after that? It’s TV time, baby. “I love TV, I want to be a part of that,” Maas said, “and I want to see everything adapted the way I envision it and the way fans envision it.”
