William Levy, the telenovela star who was arrested Monday in South Florida, told reporters he was just trying to break up a fight before he was detained.
“I got in the middle trying to prevent the situation from escalating, and well, I was the one who ended up being handcuffed,” he told reporters outside Broward County Jail on Tuesday after posting bail. “In the end, I was the one who had to leave.”
Levy, 44, was arrested Monday night in Weston, about 45 miles north of Miami, and charged with trespassing and disorderly intoxication.
According to police, Levy started the disturbance inside Baires Grill, the Miami Herald reported. When staff inside the Argentinian restaurant ordered Levy to leave, cops said he refused and escalated the situation.
Sources told People en Español the dispute erupted due to the price of a bill, which Levy thought was too high. Levy did not mention any argument over the check.
Born in Cuba, Levy rose to fame on “Café Con Aroma de Mujer” before pivoting to English-speaking productions including “Resident Evil.” He was proclaimed the “Latin Brad Pitt” for his dashing good looks, and his performances on “Dancing With the Stars” were widely praised.
