Evil – Fear of the Future

The opening sequence of this episode was shot really beautifully, transitioning from each character. The best part had to be Leland getting roughed up in prison. He deserves so much more but let’s take what we can get. Speaking of someone else who needs to get what they deserve, we learn that Andy is cheating on Kristen. Poor Kurt getting caught in the middle of the mess.

David is promoted as Father Frank is retiring but David says it’s a “black buff” meaning he is being promoted because the Church is going under. When we get to the memorial service it is a perfect fit just for Sheryl. She wouldn’t want a bunch of people sitting around crying but rather telling funny stories and that is exactly what we saw. Even though none of the people there were recognizable, the love for Sheryl was felt. David and Kristen have another intimate conversation that further showcases their love and closeness.

Kristen is having a conversation with a new character named Ellie who seems very comfortable around the house and seems to know a lot about Kristen. She states that she is Laura from the future and she has a warning for Kristen. Of course Kristen reacts as expected and you just want to scream at her to listen, especially with the return of the demon George.

I was so happy to see Kristen confront Andy when she learns of his cheating. I really wanted her to hit him. She has been denying herself the love of David out of respect for him and he cheats on her. At least she is free to pursue her heart’s desires. When she returns home, Ben is there to comfort her. Their friendship as with David, is part of what makes the show so great. Kristen needs her boys.

David’s fears are realized when he is told the assessments have been cut and he has to fire Kristen and Ben. Ben finally tells David everything fans have been saying – go be with Kristen. It is so obvious to all the people around them that they are madly in love. David gives a really moving reason as to why he cannot give in. I feel like for the first time this season we finally get to see Mike Colter (as David) tap into something more.

Meanwhile, Leland comes up with an insanity defense from his whacky lawyer. However, it turns out that his “incompetent” lawyer is actually some mega demon and the evil that has come to New York to end the world. We are finally getting somewhere in the story this season. It has been a slow burn for sure but it feels like the payoff is coming soon.

I’m going to jump into the meat of this episode. We see the usual investigations from Ben after Ellie reveals herself to be Laura from the future and we are given an explanation that she is actually the woman that Andy has been sleeping with. I am not sure I buy that completely because how would she know that David would be moving in the apartment in six months? The explanation just didn’t explain everything she said.

I enjoyed the emotional aspect of this episode as well as the movement in the relationship of David and Kristen. The girls continuing to be one of the best aspects of the series and taking down bad guys is always a treat. Also, to finally see the “evil” come to New York was great. I really hope Ellie is Future Laura and not Andy’s mistress. What did you think of the episode? Leave a comment and remember to connect with me on X @jereereviews to discuss more.
