Celebrity: Mike Tyson,’ in the last 40 years. Then and Now #shorts #celebrity #miketyson #boxing

Michael Gerard “Mike” Tyson is a former US heavyweight boxer. In 1986, at the age of 20 years and 144 days, he became the youngest boxer ever to win a world heavyweight title.

Mike Tyson was born the youngest of three children in poor circumstances in the New York borough of Brooklyn. Tyson hardly knew his father, who left the family when Mike was two years old.
Until he was ten years old, Tyson lived with his family in Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, one of the poorest New York neighborhoods.

Although Tyson became a criminal at an early age – he was soon conspicuous for various crimes (pickpocketing, armed robbery) – at that time nothing indicated a future career as a “bad boy” of boxing. Tyson was rather shy as a child, lived a secluded life and was considered a weakling by his peers.
His great hobby was pigeon breeding.

As a twelve-year-old, Mike Tyson had already been arrested 38 times by the police for various offenses. Eventually, he was sent to a school for troubled children in Catskill, New York State.
His physical education teacher there, Bobby Stewart, a former professional boxer, was impressed by Tyson’s physical abilities, but initially turned down his request to teach him fist fighting.

Only after Tyson improved his academic performance did Stewart yield to the boy’s will and give him his first boxing lessons. He soon introduced Tyson to trainer Cus D’Amato.

The latter raved after seeing the only thirteen-year-old Tyson in sparring and reportedly let himself be carried away to the assertion: “This will be the future heavyweight champion of the world”.

From that time on, Mike Tyson was specifically prepared by Cus D’Amato for a career as a boxer – first as an amateur, then as a professional. D’Amato arranged with the New York City Department of Education for Tyson to live with him and his partner in Catskill. When Tyson’s mother also died of cancer, D’Amato eventually became the young boxing talent’s legal guardian.

Mike Tyson lived with D’Amato under one roof along with several other boxers. Initially, he was given a young trainer, Teddy Atlas, who taught him the “peek-a-boo” style coined by Cus D’Amato. The training soon began to have an effect on Tyson. Due to his enormous physical strength – at the age of 15 he was already reportedly bench-pressing over 125 kg – Tyson was already sparring mostly with adult opponents.

To financially secure Tyson’s boxing career in the amateurs, Cus D’Amato found financially strong backers in his two friends Jim Jacobs, a former world-class player in American handball, and Bill Clayton, an ex-advertising man. Tyson’s amateur career got off to a promising start. In a striking number of his amateur fights, which were usually scheduled for three rounds each, Tyson was able to win early.
